FAQ: Safety Training

Question 1 – How can I become a snowmobile safety instructor?

Answer:      Ask your local volunteer snowmobile safety instructor if he/she has a “Snowmobile Safety Training Course Instructor Application Form”.  DCNR provides these to all instructors.  The form contains the usual information such as name and address, but it also contains about 30 basic snowmobile experience and safety-related questions for you to answer.  Simply complete the application and return it to the address listed on the application.

If your local instructor does not have an application, contact DCNR’s Recreation Section at 717-783-7941.

Question 2 – Can I copy my "Snowmobile Safety Training Certificate" and  carry that with me on the sled instead of the original, so that I don't lose the original?

Answer:       You need to carry the original.  If the original is lost, damaged, etc., you only need to call/write DCNR and they will replace the certificate.  This is only necessary if the youth snowmobiler hasn't yet reached their 16th birthday.

When the snowmobiler reaches 16 years of age, his/her record is deleted from DCNR’s files.  DCNR’s contact information is as follows:

DCNR – Bureau of Forestry
400 Market Street, RCSOB 6th Floor

Question 3 – Is my PA "Snowmobile Safety Training Certificate" good in NY, Maine,  MI, VT, WI, Ontario, Quebec...?

Answer: Safety training works similar to machine registrations.  If the State or Province recognizes Pennsylvania's safety training we recognize theirs.  Right now we are not aware of any state, territory or province that does not accept our training certificate.  Incidentally, this is why we try to avoid any radical changes in the courseware to maintain consistency in course content that has already been established in other state training courses
